The Lahaina Jackpot Tournament Committie would like to thank ANDY TATE for his photographic documentation and thorough record keeping. Andy has served as the IGFA representative for Maui County for the past ten years. He has written a weekly HARBOR REPORT for the Lahaina News for 24-years, and a monthly column for the Hawaii Fishing News for 25-years. Andy has been a member of the Lahaina Yacht Club for 26-years, and has run the annual Spring Wahine Fishing Tournament for the past twelve years.
For the past 26 years Professional Photojournalist Andy Tate has photographed every fish brought to the scales in both the Wahine and the Jackpot Fishing Tournaments, recording the fish’s statistics and catch locations, as well as any reported Tag & Release information.
Among the more memorable catches Andy has captured are the 1201.8-pound World record Marlin caught by Doug Jorgensen aboard the Cormorant with Captain Bruce Matson in 1993. And,- the two Granders (1,000 lbs or more) caught in the same Tournament in 1997, when the Magic, with Captain Russell Tanaka weighed the Jackpot winning fish at 1106.0-pounds by Rodney Kam, and just 4.5-pounds lighter was the 1101.5-pounder by Andrew Mau aboard the Shirley Y, with Captain Rahn Yamashita.
The Lahaina Jackpot Tournament still holds both State and Internationalfame and recognition for weighing two 1,100-pound marlin during a Tournament in a single day. Plus, no tournament in the State has ever had two 1,100-plus pound marlin win the event.
